Supporting and advancing agricultural and environmental research

AxisTech’s research and development program underpins some of Australia’s most innovative agricultural and environmental research — from on-farm trials to deep-tech development. We work hand-in-hand with universities, research institutions, and industry partners to support, enable, and deliver research outcomes that are measurable, scalable, and sustainable.

Our role extends across the full spectrum of research — from supplying sensors, connectivity, and data infrastructure that enable on-farm experimentation, to leading R&D in electronics, materials science, and data systems. AxisTech helps translate research into practice and innovation into adoption.

Our Research Areas

AxisTech undertakes extensive applied and technical R&D across multiple domains:

  • Electronics & embedded systems — low-power, ruggedised controllers, telemetry units, and remote IoT gateways.

  • Electrochemical & environmental sensors — measuring water quality, soil nutrients, gases, and waste-water chemistry.

  • Edge AI & neuromorphic processors — adaptive local analytics for pattern recognition, image processing, and autonomy.

  • Materials science & sustainability — plastics recycling, plant-based polymers, 3D printing composites, and circular manufacturing.

  • Circular waste-to-product systems — converting waste streams into productive inputs, including nutrient recovery, composting, and circular economy models for agriculture and regional industries.

  • Organic amendments and alternate fertilisers & soil improvers — advancing the use and verification of composts, biofertilisers, and natural soil enhancers to improve productivity, soil carbon, and resilience.

  • Water, soil & environmental measurement — sensor development for soil property measurement, water monitoring, gases and environmental applications.
  • Waste-water management — verifying energy use, treatment performance, and water-quality outputs for innovative systems.

  • Cameras & computer vision — for remote monitoring, automated detection, and biodiversity analytics.

  • Farm machinery & bulk-materials processing — prototype testing, sensor integration, and digital validation.

  • Livestock systems — technology-enabled monitoring of animal welfare, feedbase, productivity, and emissions, integrating hardware, telemetry, and data-driven analytics to improve sustainability.

  • Cropping systems — soil and plant monitoring, precision management, yield optimisation, and sustainability validation using advanced sensing, imaging, and data modelling.

  • Data engineering & data science — advanced modelling, analytics, and visualisation for complex agricultural datasets.

From Concept to Impact

AxisTech supports the entire research lifecycle — from concept through to demonstration and adoption.

  • Device & data support: supplying and integrating field sensors, cameras, and data platforms.

  • Implementation & field operations: site setup, calibration, monitoring, and local support.

  • Data management & analysis: real-time dashboards, quality assurance, and visualisation through AxisStream.

  • Project administration: budgeting, procurement, stakeholder engagement, and milestone tracking.

  • Reporting & dissemination: technical documentation, knowledge transfer, and partner communication.

Supporting Australia’s Research Programs

AxisTech plays a dual role — developing proprietary technologies while also supporting external research programs in farming systems, natural resource management, and industry innovation.

We are proud to provide technology, data, and field support to programs such as:

  • Coolindown Farms × MLA: deployment of integrated livestock, water, and environmental sensors to evaluate animal welfare, emissions, and productivity. AxisTech provided hardware, data architecture, and implementation support, helping MLA and the producers generate validated research outcomes at commercial scale.

  • Vineyard Research: integrating weather, soil, and canopy sensors with data-management dashboards to support phenotyping, disease-pressure analysis, and vineyard management research.

  • On-Farm Research Networks: working with grower groups, consultants, and government researchers to establish and manage digital monitoring and data-sharing frameworks that accelerate practice-change and adoption.

Key Research Projects

  • FOGO Amendment Trials (WA): AxisTech led field and greenhouse trials assessing composted FOGO amendments for grain production — analysing deep-placement soil amelioration and precision seed-zone applications.

  • Statewide On-Farm Trials (WA Wheatbelt): Across 21 farms from Esperance to Binnu, AxisTech delivered a 3,000 km trial network with replicated treatments on major crop types.

  • Waste-Water Management Verification: AxisTech developed a sensor and monitoring framework for evaluating innovative waste-water treatment systems.

  • Northern Rangelands Biodiversity & Challa Station Projects: AxisTech’s hardware and data systems underpin automated biodiversity monitoring and natural-capital reporting.

  • Digital Supply-Chain Integration (MLA & Stone Axe Project): AxisTech connected operational, feedlot, and processing data into a single platform to demonstrate full-chain traceability and analytics.

Partnerships

AxisTech’s success in applied research is built on strong partnerships across research, industry, and government.

  • Research & Development Corporations (RDCs): Collaborations with MLA, GRDC, and AgriFutures Australia to deliver data-driven R&D in livestock, cropping, and sustainability.

  • Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs): Tier 1 Partner in the Zero Net Emissions Agriculture CRC (ZNE Ag CRC), and collaborations with the Food Agility CRC and Soil CRC to connect sensors, data platforms, and soil-measurement systems.

  • Australian Research Council (ARC) Hubs: Participation in Hubs focused on smart sensors, advanced manufacturing, and circular materials.

  • Universities & Research Institutions: Partnerships with UWA, University of Melbourne, Charles Sturt University, Curtin University, ECU, UQ, QUT, and University of Adelaide for co-design, field deployment, and data integration.

  • Government & Industry: Projects delivered with DPIRD, NSW DPI, and DCCEEW, as well as private sector and regional industry groups advancing sustainability and digital transformation.
